Damask fabric is a woven pattern of formal design that includes stylized leaves in a formal configuration usually pointing upward in a heralding fashion. Additional fluers, flourishes, and vines may create a lattice effect in between the more static elements. Traditionally, damask fabrics are a variety of tapestry fabrics. Today, some dealers use the term to describe only the motif type, so we usually add the terms "woven" or tapestry to our description of damask.
Historically, the damask fabric was crisp with a tight weave. A brocade is even sturdier. Today, the damask category includes chenille and other fabrics made of synthetic yarns so that the meaning of damask has widened primarily to describe the type of motif.
